Our vision for Utopos to be representative of the finest single estate Barossa Valley red wines is gradually being realised. The response from Australia’s wine media to the first wines from the 2016 vintage was very positive, further reinforced with continued high scores subsequent vintages. Good friend Dave Brookes has recently taken on the plum job of reviewing Barossa wines for Halliday’s Wine Companion, and we’re very happy with his thoughts on these three wines.

2019 Utopos Shiraz
“With 6% mataro, destemmed with some whole berries and aged in French oak hogsheads (40% new) for 2 years. Deep red purple in the glass, with a perfumed cascade of satsuma plum and macerated blackberry characters, underscored by hints of baking spice, licorice, dark chocolate, vanilla and cedar. The balance is impeccable, with great fruit purity and detail throughout its length; the classy, cedary cut of French oak perhaps a little more noticeable on the palate. Deep, resonant and long, with über-ripe tannins and a sense of brightness to its form.” 96 points, Dave Brookes – Halliday’s Wine Companion

2021 Utopos Grenache
“95% grenache/5% mataro off 25yo vines, destemmed with some whole berries. Aged for 10 months in seasoned French oak puncheons and hogsheads. Bright red purple in the glass with aromas of juicy plum, red cherry fruits, exotic spice, gingerbread, violets, earth and red licorice. The fruit weight is spot on, pure yet with a distinct sense of space. The aromas transpose over onto the palate, which shows a chalky tannin texture and shimmering acid line. It’s a cracker.” 96 points, Dave Brookes – Halliday’s Wine Companion

2019 Utopos Mataro Shiraz Grenache
“50/35/15% mataro/shiraz/grenache, from 15–18yo vines. MSG is of course GSM turned on its head. The black fruits and firm, mineral, savoury tannins of mataro are the game here, which could threaten to topple the balance in the hands of mere mortals, but here perfectly in place in the succulent and glossy style of Kym Teusner. A benchmark of this blend, perfectly set off by high-cocoa dark chocolate French oak and impressive acid line. Patience.” 94 points, Dave Brookes – Halliday’s Wine Companion
